Andhra Pradesh

India is full of surprises, and my recent journey to Belum Caves was one of the most exciting and tremendous experiences I’ve had. Located in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh, this cave system is the second largest in India, stretching almost 3 kilometers in length, though only 1.5 kilometers is open for travelers to explore.

A Cave Carved by Time

As I stepped into the entrance of Belum Caves, I couldn’t help but marvel at the sheer force of nature that created this underground marvel. It is said that thousands of years ago, an ancient river flowed beneath the surface, slowly carving out this massive limestone formation. Over time, nature sculpted intricate stalactites, stalagmites, and mesmerizing rock formations that make you feel like you’ve entered another world.

A Journey Through Darkness and Light

Walking through the dimly lit pathways, I was awestruck by the vast chambers and narrow passages that make up the cave. The air inside is surprisingly fresh, thanks to the multiple air vents connected to the surface, ensuring that oxygen circulates properly. This was a relief, as the thought of being deep inside a cave can be daunting. I even felt a slight anxiety creeping in at one point, but standing close to one of the pipe outlets for a few minutes helped me regain my calm.

Crawling, Climbing & Exploring

Belum Caves isn’t just a walk-through experience; it’s an adventure. There were sections where I had to crawl, climb, and squeeze through narrow openings, making me feel like a true explorer. The silence inside the cave was profound—just the sound of dripping water and my own footsteps echoing in the distance. There was something peaceful about being enveloped by nature’s ancient artistry.

Lost in Time: The Forgotten History of Belum Caves

What fascinated me even more was the history of the cave. In the olden days, locals used it as a dumping ground for garbage! Hard to believe, right? It wasn’t until a British officer came across the true beauty of Belum Caves. Since then, it has been restored and preserved, allowing travelers like me to experience its exceptional design.

Unlike other commercialized tourist spots, Belum Caves remains an unexplored gem. It’s not every day that you get to step into a prehistoric wonder, where nature and history blend seamlessly. If you crave adventure, mystery, and tranquility, this place is a must-visit.

A Hidden Treasure Worth Exploring

Would I go back? Absolutely! There’s something humbling about standing inside a formation that has existed for millennia, reminding us how small we are in the grand timeline of nature.

So, if you’re looking for an offbeat travel experience, pack your bags, bring a flashlight, and get ready to explore India’s underground marvel—Belum Caves!
