Chasing Waterfalls: A Journey to Jog Falls And Dabbe Falls…

Table of Contents

Last weekend, my adventure-loving soul took me from Bangalore to two of Karnataka’s most breathtaking waterfalls—Jog Falls and Dabbe Falls. The journey was as thrilling as the destination itself.

I left Bangalore early in the morning around 5 AM to avoid traffic and took NH48 via Tumkur and Shivamogga. The roads were smooth for most parts, except for a few patches nearing Jog Falls. The drive took about 7 hours, with scenic stops in between.

Jog Falls

Reaching Jog Falls first, I was mesmerized by the cascading water plunging from 830 feet. Although the crowd was decent, it wasn’t overpowering, and the viewpoints provided by Raja, Rani, Roarer, and Rocket were distinctive. Raja is the most photographed, resembling a king’s crown. Rani is softer and more delicate, with a quiet, misty drop. Roarer makes a loud, thunderous noise. Rocket plunges into the gorge with high velocity. This waterfall is formed by Sharavathi river and if you wish to trek to the base you have to descend down around 1500 steps. Climbing down the steep stairs might be difficult for older people and people with knee problems. Carrying some food is advised because the restaurants around Jog Falls were restricted to minimal stalls offering simple meals and snacks. Early in the morning, when the mist enhances the enigma, is the ideal time to visit.

Exploring Sharavathi Wildlife Sanctuary

Sharavathi Wildlife Sanctuary, spread over 431 sq. km, is a hidden gem for nature enthusiasts. Located near Jog Falls, it is home to diverse flora and fauna, including tigers, leopards, sloth bears, and several bird species. The sanctuary is open from 6 AM to 6 PM, with an entry fee of around INR 50 per person. I recommend a safari or guided trek to fully experience the dense forests and stunning landscapes. It’s an ideal stop for wildlife lovers .

Dabbe Falls

From Jog Falls, I headed towards Dabbe Falls, about 80 km away. The final stretch of the journey involved an off-road drive followed by a 3 km trek through dense forest. Unlike Jog Falls, Dabbe Falls is more secluded, with fewer tourists, making it a paradise for nature lovers. The trek can be demanding, especially in monsoon when the path is slippery.

My Concluding Thoughts

Both falls offer contrasting experiences—Jog Falls is grand and easily accessible, while Dabbe Falls is raw and demands effort. For those who seek both comfort and adventure, visiting these two gems in Karnataka is an unforgettable experience.
