Exploring the Wilderness: A Thrilling Journey to Siruvani Dam

Table of Contents

My friend Arjun and I made the decision to take a road trip to the Siruvani Dam, which is renowned for its unspoiled beauty and exceptionally delicious water, last weekend in order to get away from the bustling city of Cochin. What began as a lighthearted notion swiftly evolved into an unforgettable event.

Journey

We set out early in the morning, traveling on NH544 in the direction of Palakkad. Until we reached Walayar, the journey was uneventful; then, the real experience started. The winding roads through the lush forests of Attapadi tested our driving skills, but the scenic beauty kept us mesmerized. Verdant hills, misty valleys, and the occasional sighting of wildlife made the drive all the more interesting. As we neared Siruvani, the air became cooler, infused with the earthy aroma of the forest.

Safari

After reaching the forest check post, we waited for the designated safari jeep as private vehicles weren’t allowed beyond this point. The safari ride lasted for about 45 minutes, costing approximately INR 200 per person. The bumpy ride through the dense forest was both thrilling and nerve-wracking. Towering trees, chirping birds, and glimpses of wild elephants in the distance made the safari feel really great. The guides provided interesting insights into the flora and fauna, enhancing our experience.

Dam And The Sweet Water

Upon reaching the dam, we were fascinated. The reservoir, cradled between emerald-green hills, reflected the sky like a giant mirror. We walked along the dam, enjoying the serenity of the place. We took a short trek through the surrounding greenery. Capturing the stunning landscapes in our camera, we sat down to rest, relax and have our snacks which we had carried. We made sure that we dint leave any plastic waste behind. The real highlight, however, was the water. Siruvani’s water is renowned for its natural sweetness. Taking a sip felt like tasting nature’s elixir—pure, refreshing, and unmatched. It is believed that the unique taste is because of the minerals present in the surrounding Western Ghats, where water flows through rich, herbal forests before reaching the dam. The dam serves as a crucial water source for Coimbatore and nearby regions, providing high-quality drinking water. It is considered one of the tastiest natural waters of the world.

Final Thoughts

As the sun began to set, we reluctantly bid goodbye to this paradise. The journey back was filled with stories and laughter, already planning our next escape into nature’s lap. Siruvani wasn’t just a trip; it was a soulful retreat we’d never forget.
