Last January, after watching the superhit film Manjumel Boys, my elder brother and I decided to explore the iconic Guna Cave in Kodaikanal. The movie had ignited a spark in us to visit this mysterious and captivating place, which was featured prominently in the film. Little did we know that the adventure would be as thrilling and challenging as the movie itself!
The Journey to Guna Cave
Guna Cave lies approximately 8 kilometers from Kodaikanal town. The site where the cave is situated is encircled by rich forests, perpendicular cliffs, and breathtaking scenery. During our trek to the cave, Kodaikanal’s weather was cold and cool, with temperatures ranging around 10°C, which made climbing more of a thrilling experience.
The crowd on our visit in January was rather large, probably because of the holiday season and the popularity of the cave following the release of Manjumel Boys. There were a few tourists around, but it was tolerable, and the ambiance was still peaceful. But the number of visitors had definitely grown since the success of the film, with local vendors selling souvenirs, snacks, and beverages to the stream of travelers. I couldn’t help but remark on how much the prices had inflated, as a direct effect of the demand from moviegoers increasing.
Challenges and Prohibitions
Guna Cave view from the top is breathtaking but there are serious dangers involved in venturing closer to the cave. Climbing down into the cave itself has been prohibited for safety reasons. Over the years, there have been numerous incidents of people slipping or losing their control due to the slippery rocks and steep cliffs, leading to accidents. The area is known for its sharp drop-offs, making it extremely dangerous to attempt the descent. Authorities have restricted access to certain parts of the cave. Visitors are now only allowed to view the cave from a safe distance, ensuring they stay within the designated viewing areas. The police patrol the site to ensure that no one crosses the barriers, maintaining safety for all.
The Roots Tree and Photo Opportunities
One of the most striking features near the cave is a tree whose roots form an intricate network, making it a perfect spot for photos. As we approached the cave, we saw numerous tourists lined up to take pictures with the tree, capturing the surreal beauty of its exposed roots, which seemed to defy gravity. It was a great photo opportunity that added to the adventure.
Safety or Danger?
While Guna Cave offers a unique and thrilling experience, it’s important to approach the visit with caution. The area remains beautiful and mysterious, but it can also be deadly if proper precautions are not taken. Despite the restrictions, the cave remains a must-visit for those seeking an adventure in the hills of Kodaikanal.
