Trivandrum, Kerala’s relaxed capital, has no dearth of treasures, but nothing beats the experience of spending a day between the waves of Kovalam and the backwaters of Veli. Whether you’re a beach bum or a nature enthusiast, this combination hits all the right chords.
First Stop: Sunrise at Kovalam Beach
We started early, departing the city at 6:30 AM to witness the sunrise over Kovalam, a 25–30 minute drive away from Trivandrum’s center. As the orange orb of the sun appeared over the Arabian Sea, the waves sparkled and early joggers glided in harmony with the wind. It was quiet, calm—and the ideal way to start the day.

Kovalam Highlights
Lighthouse Beach: The most emblematic of the three beaches, complete with a dramatic red-and-white striped lighthouse that you can climb up to. What you see at the top? Stunning.
Hawa Beach: Less busy and ideal for easy amble or rapid dip.
Samudra Beach: Favourite among locals, ideal for serene contemplation or observing fishermen at work.
We had a light breakfast at German Bakery (tropical fruit bowls, fresh juices, banana pancakes) before heading to the beach for a swim. The lifeguards are vigilant, and the beach is clean and tourist-friendly.
Activities
Ayurvedic massages along the beach.
Surfing or bodyboarding rentals.
Shopping at seaside stalls—cute cotton garments, handicrafts, seashell jewelry.
Veli Tourist Village
After lunch, we headed to Veli Tourist Village, which is around 13 km from there (30–40 minutes depending on traffic). Here, Veli Lake joins the Arabian Sea, offering a beautiful combination of peaceful backwaters and seaside atmosphere.

Things to Do in Veli
Pedal boating or speed boating on the lake.
Walk on the floating bridge—so much fun and Insta-perfect!
Visit the sculpture garden, which is full of quirky sculptures by artist Kanayi Kunhiraman.
Visit the Veli Children’s Park if you’re traveling with kids.

The place is ideal for families, couples, or solo travelers who want a chilled afternoon with nature, art, and photography. There’s also a small café and a KSRTC-run restaurant, serving typical Kerala snacks like pazham pori and cutlets.
Kids love the open spaces, play areas, and boat rides, while adults enjoy the serene backwater charm.
Stay Options
Both places are clean, scenic, and safe, making them a hit with families and couples alike.
Stay options range from luxury beachfront resorts like Turtle On The Beach and Taj Green Cove to cozy homestays and budget lodges near the coast.
The combination of natural beauty, fun activities, and great food makes Kovalam and Veli an unbeatable weekend retreat—relaxing, entertaining, and memorable for everyone.
Golden Hour & Back to Town
By sunset time, we were back along the beachwalk near Shanghumugham, just in time to see aircraft landing over water as the sun lowered beneath the horizon. If time permits, this is a wonderful side trip on your way back from Veli.
Travel Tips
Best Time to Visit: October to March for mild weather.
Take sunscreen, flip-flops, and a towel along for beach visits.
Stay indoors during midday sun if you’re not accustomed to coastal heat.

Final Thoughts
This Kovalam-Veli day trip was the ideal combination of adventure and peace, reminding us why Kerala is indeed “God’s Own Country.” The sea, the lake, the culture, the food—it all fell into place like magic.
