Our college days were full of late-night chats, endless laughter, and big dreams of adventures far beyond the classroom. So, when the five of us—Meera, Anil, Priya, Raj, and I—finally found the time to reunite after graduation, we knew we had to do something special. It didn’t take long for us to decide on a trek that had been on our bucket list for ages: Sandakphu, the highest peak in West Bengal. Nestled in the heart of the mighty Himalayas, Sandakphu promised stunning views of Everest, Kanchenjunga, and other snow-capped giants. What we didn’t expect, though, was that this trip would not only test our limits but also gift us with challenges, laughter, and memories that would stay with us long after the journey ended.
The Beginning of the Adventure
Our journey began in the bustling town of Darjeeling. After a quick breakfast at a local cafe, we hopped on a jeep that took us to Manebhanjan, the starting point of our trek. The excitement was great, but so was the nervousness. None of us had trekked such a long distance before, and we weren’t sure how the thin mountain air would treat us.
We were greeted by our guide, Tenzing, a seasoned trekker with a wealth of knowledge about the mountains. He quickly briefed us on the route, the weather, and safety precautions. The idea of trekking for 5-6 hours every day for four days seemed daunting, but the views ahead made us all eager to begin.

Trekking Through the Clouds
Day 1 was challenging. The initial stretch was steep, and the climb left us breathless. But what kept us going were the stunning landscapes surrounding us. As we ascended, we found ourselves walking through thick forests of rhododendron trees, their bright flowers adding color to the otherwise green surroundings. The misty atmosphere, with clouds occasionally sweeping through the trees, gave the whole experience a dreamlike quality.

However, things didn’t always go smoothly. Raj, who had been a little overconfident about his fitness, struggled with the altitude. He had to slow down multiple times and take breaks. The rest of us, determined to keep the group together, encouraged him, sharing jokes and funny incidents from our college days.
Reaching Tumling: Our First Stop
After several hours of trudging uphill, we finally reached our first stop – Tumling, a small village that offered magnificent views of the surrounding peaks. We stayed in a quaint little lodge, where we were treated to hot tea and delicious momos. The cold mountain air had us bundling up in layers, and we gathered around a bonfire to exchange stories under the starlit sky.
The next day was when the real beauty of the trek began to unfold. As we ascended towards Sandakphu, we started to get glimpses of the mighty Kanchenjunga and, eventually, Everest. We were in this together, pushing through the challenges.
The Final Stretch to Sandakphu
By the third day, we were exhausted but determined. We found ourselves helping each other – Priya, usually the most energetic, would often check in on Raj, and Anil kept the mood light with his endless supply of hilarious anecdotes. At one point, the weather turned, and we were caught in a sudden snowstorm. While it was beautiful, the cold was intense. But this is where we truly bonded, helping each other with gloves, scarves, and warmth.
Finally, on the fourth day, after what felt like a lifetime of walking, we reached the top of Sandakphu. The feeling of accomplishment was indescribable. We stood there, looking out at the panoramic view of snow-covered peaks, with Everest and Kanchenjunga towering in the distance. It was a moment of pure triumph.
Challenges Along the Way
The trek was undoubtedly tough. From altitude sickness to unpredictable weather, we faced a series of challenges. The cold was intense, especially at night, and the physical exertion was more than we had anticipated. But the most challenging part was when our jeep broke down on the way to Manebhanjan, forcing us to walk an additional 10 kilometers to reach the base camp. It wasn’t easy, but as a group, we pushed through.
The Joy of Friendship and the Trek
Despite the challenges, the trek to Sandakphu turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences of our lives. The beauty of the mountains, the camaraderie we shared, and the sense of accomplishment we felt at the summit are things we will never forget. The journey brought out the best in each of us, and we realized that true friendships are forged in the most unexpected places – even at the highest points on earth.
As we made our way back to Darjeeling, tired but elated, we promised ourselves we’d do this again someday. After all, a trip like this is not just about reaching the summit; it’s about the moments that make the climb worthwhile.
