Meghalaya, with its lush landscapes, misty hills, and vibrant culture, had always been on my travel list. I finally had the chance to explore it with my family, and here’s a glimpse into our unforgettable journey through this stunning state.
Day 1: Shillong – A Gateway to Tranquility
We started our journey in Guwahati, making our way to Shillong, Meghalaya’s capital, with our first stop at the serene Umiam Lake. The placid waters and surrounding hills offered a warm welcome to the state. After soaking in the beauty, we continued exploring Ward’s Lake, where we took a relaxing stroll around the calm waters, before heading to Police Bazar. The bustling market offered a lively atmosphere with numerous cafes, shops, and local eateries where we sampled the region’s delectable food.
Day 2: Mawryngkhang Bamboo Trek – An Exciting Challenge
Our next adventure led us to Wakhen Village, where we embarked on the thrilling Mawryngkhang Bamboo Trek. Walking on bamboo bridges suspended high over deep gorges was a heart-pounding experience. The trek allowed us to witness Meghalaya’s untouched beauty, surrounded by lush greenery and towering trees—a rare sight that made every step worthwhile.
Day 3: Laitlum Canyon – An Awe-Inspiring View

The day unfolded at Laitlum Canyon, where we were greeted by panoramic views of rolling hills and valleys. Standing at the edge, it felt like we were on top of the world, embraced by nature’s vastness. The tranquility and beauty were unparalleled, making this one of the most spectacular moments of our trip.
Day 4: Nongjrong Sunrise – A Magical Dawn And Khasi Mandarins
At Nongjrong, we witnessed one of the most beautiful sunrises of our lives. The mist-covered hills illuminated by golden sun rays was a splendid sight.

Khasi mandarin orange is cultivated here and the trees laden with these juicy and sweet fruits add to the village’s natural beauty. To celebrate this bounty ,Nongjrong Festival is celebrated annually with a wide range of musical performances, kayaking, camping and orchard treks.
Day 5: Cherrapunji – Waterfalls and Caves
Our journey continued to Cherrapunji, famous for its breathtaking waterfalls and mystical caves. We explored the Mawsmai Caves and marveled at the intricate rock formations.

The Wei Sawdong Falls, with its three-tiered cascade, left us spellbound, while the sound of rushing water and the cool mist created a fairytale-like ambiance.
Day 6: Double Decker Root Bridge – A Treacherous yet Rewarding Trek
The trek to the Double Decker Root Bridge in Nongriat Village was physically demanding, but the sight of the living root bridge, grown over centuries, was absolutely worth the effort. These natural structures are created by the Khasi tribe using the roots of rubber trees by training them to grow across rivers and streams.

The bridge can hold upto 30 people at a time, but locals told us its always better to walk in smaller groups to avoid damage. As years pass, the bridge grows stronger as the roots strengthen and intertwine.
Day 7: Dawki and Mawlynnong – Nature’s Pristine Wonders
Our final leg took us to Dawki, where the crystal-clear waters of the river made it look like boats were floating in mid-air. The serenity of the place was hypnotic, and we enjoyed a peaceful boat ride in the sparkling river. Our next stop was Mawlynnong, recognized as Asia’s cleanest village. Its tidy streets, vibrant green surroundings, and warm-hearted locals made it a delightful stop.
Bonus Stop: Jowai – The Hidden Gem

On our way back, we visited Jowai, where we discovered the beautiful Phe Phe Falls and Krang Suri Falls. Surrounded by thick forests, the turquoise water cascading down into a natural pool made for a stunning sight—an unforgettable way to conclude our trip.
