As we set off on a journey filled with excitement to our destination: the famed Sakrebailu Elephant Camp in Shivamogga and the Dubare Elephant Camp in Coorg our kids, brimming with enthusiasm, couldn’t wait to meet the gentle giants we had told them so much about.
Sakrebailu Elephant Camp

A short 14 km drive from Shivamogga, through winding roads flanked by dense forests, brought us to Sakrebailu Elephant Camp. The air was fresh, the morning mist still lingering over the Tunga River, and then we saw them—a herd of elephants leisurely bathing in the river.
The caretakers, or mahouts, welcomed us warmly and handed the kids small baskets of jaggery and sugarcane. Feeding the elephants was an absolute delight—the kids giggled as the massive trunks gently curled around the treats.

Next came the elephant bathing experience. Standing knee-deep in the river, we watched in awe as the elephants playfully splashed water while their mahouts scrubbed them clean. Our little one even got a chance to help, and the joy on his face was priceless.
After a short elephant ride, we took a nature walk, exploring the serene surroundings before heading to our next stop—Coorg.
Dubare Elephant Camp

The drive to Dubare Elephant Camp, about 30 km from Madikeri, was picturesque, with coffee plantations lining the roads. Located along the Cauvery River, this camp had a different charm—more rustic, yet equally mesmerizing.
We arrived just in time for the elephant interaction session, where we learned about their diet, behavior, and history. The kids were fascinated by the stories of how these elephants were once part of royal processions.
The real thrill, however, was the river bathing session. Watching the elephants play in the water was so cute and engaging. Afterward, we decided to add some adventure with a short jungle trek and even tried rafting on the Cauvery River—an adventurous bonus!

Every Family Should Visit
Both camps offered a perfect blend of education and adventure. What more could we ask for? The kids were completely thrilled by the experience—feeding, bathing, and riding elephants, all while surrounded by Karnataka’s breathtaking landscapes.
As we drove back, the kids couldn’t stop talking about their favorite moments, already asking when we could visit again. Seeing their happy faces gave us a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. It was more than just a trip; it was an unforgettable encounter with nature’s gentle giants, leaving us with memories to cherish forever.
