Some trips are just vacations. Others become memories that linger in your heart forever. Our recent family outing to Rishikesh with me, my wife, and our son aged 12 was one of the second type.
Beginning the Travel – From South to North
We began our journey from Hyderabad, taking an early morning flight to Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport. The flight was barely two hours, and from there, Rishikesh was a mere 40-minute scenic drive. As we approached the town, the air was fresher, and the green hills and glistening Ganga River greeted us with open arms.
We stayed at a quaint riverside inn—basic, clean, with a fine water view. After a quick lunch, we were ready to go.
Discovering the Spiritual Side
Rishikesh is also referred to as the Yoga Capital of the World, and you can sense the tranquility around. We began with a trip to the Triveni Ghat, where we immersed our feet in the sacred river. In the evening, we witnessed the Ganga Aarti—a bewitching experience of fire lamps, chanting, and bells ringing across the river.

The following morning, we went to see the Beatles Ashram—indeed, those Beatles! Colorful art on the walls and a feel-through of entering an idyllic, artsy world is achieved by merely stepping through the remains.
Adventure Time!
No trip to Rishikesh is complete without some thrills! Our son was super excited about river rafting, and honestly, so were we. We chose a 9 km beginner stretch, and it was perfect—fun, safe, and splashy. Floating through the rapids with the mountains around us was unforgettable.

Later, we walked over the Lakshman Jhula, a suspension bridge across the Ganga. The scenery was breathtaking, and the gentle swing made it exciting for our son (and a bit frightening for mom!).

We also took a short trek to Neer Garh Waterfall, which was surrounded by foliage and ideal for a quick splash and family selfies.
Food & Shopping
Rishikesh is all veggie, but the food was awesome. We had local thalis, street stall chai, and even wood-fired pizzas at river-facing cafes! Our son enjoyed the pancakes at Little Buddha Café!
Shopping was enjoyable too—numerous little shops with handmade jewelry, wool scarves, Rudraksha beads, and spiritual texts.
Coming Back with Hearts Full
After three stunning days, we returned to Dehradun and flew back to Hyderabad—fatigued but content. Rishikesh provided us with everything: tranquility, joy, nature, and quality time with the family. It is not common that you get to meditate in the morning and raft in the afternoon, yet Rishikesh finds equilibrium.
If you are a family seeking adventure, culture, and serenity blended together—Rishikesh needs to be on your radar.
