Our vacation to Honnavar, Karnataka, was an experience that will be etched in my memory forever with its natural splendor and adventure. Taking the road trip from Dandeli, we were welcomed by the beautiful scenic views of Honnavar, where the Sharavathi River flows into the Arabian Sea, generating peaceful backwaters and dense mangrove forests.
Boatride
The other highlight of our trip was the boat ride in the mangroves. The moment we got on the boat, the calmness of the backwaters embraced us. The soft movement of the boat and the rustling of the mangrove leaves presented a calming serenade. We glided along narrow channels fringed with dense mangrove forest, their roots creating complex designs above the surface. It felt like entering an unseen world, unspoiled and peaceful.
Birdwatching
Bird watching during the boat ride was a delightful experience. We spotted vibrant kingfishers darting across the water, graceful egrets standing still as statues, and herons gracefully wading through the shallows. Each sighting was a moment of excitement, and we were glad to have our cameras ready to capture these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat.
Secret Island, Boardwalk and Beach
Our journey also led us to two tiny islands, each possessing its own beauty. Basavaraj Durga Island, with its ancient Vijayanagara-period fort, was a glimpse of the past. The island is only accessible by boat, and its remoteness contributed to its mystique, making it an ideal place to explore and click pictures.
Another treasure was the Mangrove Boardwalk, or Kandla Vana, about 3 km from Honnavar. This nicely kept boardwalk provided us with an opportunity to stroll through the mangroves and get a bird’s eye view of the system. The signboards on the way gave us informative details of the flora and fauna, adding to our understanding of this sensitive ecosystem.
Throughout our journey, we were captivated by the unspoiled beauty of Honnavar. The pristine beaches, such as Eco Beach, offered peaceful spots to relax and enjoy the sunset. The combination of backwaters, mangroves, and islands made Honnavar a paradise for nature lovers and photographers alike.
