Golden Beginnings in Jaisalmer– Our adventure began in Jaisalmer, where all the buildings shine golden in the desert light. Nicknamed the Golden City, it’s like a fairytale come true. After stopping for chai close to the breathtaking Jaisalmer Fort, we strolled through Patwon Ki Haveli, admiring its intricate carvings and worn-in beauty. Then we set off on the road—with good tunes, shades on, and adventure in our hearts.
The Open Road & Desert Vibes
The road from Jaisalmer to Sam Sand Dunes is only 40 kilometers, but gosh—what an experience! The highway was smooth, snaking through interminable miles of thar desert landscape. We drove through charming Rajasthani villages with colorfully painted huts, camel carts, and beaming locals. We even pulled over at a street stall where an old man was making handcrafted leather mojris.

Dhaba Delights in the Middle of Nowhere
Somewhere between mid-day, our stomachs rebelled. We stopped at a simple roadside dhaba, anticipating the ordinary—but what we received was heavenly. Bajre ki roti, ker sangri with a kick, sour pickles, and cool chaach had us savoring with our fingers. The owner made us feel like kin and revealed desert secrets with twinkling eyes. It wasn’t a meal—it was an experience.
Welcome To the Dunes
By late afternoon, we rode into Sam Sand Dunes, welcomed by golden sand hills and a whirl of excitement in the air. We climbed onto camels (a little wobbly to start!) and rode off across the dunes as the sun set. The sky became a dreamy orange, and before we knew it, we were in a postcard come to life.
Desert Nights & Cultural Lights

When night arrived, the actual magic started. The locals had a cultural performance outdoors in the evening under the starry sky—folk music, traditional dancers dancing in colorful ghagras, and a bonfire that we held our desert-cold hands near. We rested on charpais, enjoying masala chai, totally entranced by its energy and beauty.
A Few Bumps in the Sand
Not all was plain sailing—signal was sporadic, and petrol pumps were few and far between, so advance planning was in order. Turn-by-turn came from locals instead of Google Maps, which resulted in a couple of detours—but, I’m being honest, getting slightly lost just made the trip more enjoyable.
A Memory Etched in Sand

From ancient forts and roadside feasts to starry songs and sandy escapades, our road journey from Jaisalmer to Sam Sand Dunes was one of a kind. It wasn’t the destination that mattered—it was the friendship, spontaneity, and spirit of Rajasthan.
If you ever happen to be in the desert with a full tank of gas and a friend who utters “let’s go”—don’t hesitate. Just drive.
