Venice of the East – My First Solo Trip to Alappuzha

Table of Contents

Solo traveling had always been a dream, and in January 2022, I finally gifted myself this experience after landing my first job. Alappuzha, also known as the Venice of the East, was the perfect choice—a place not too far yet deeply connected to my love for water. As an aquaphile, I longed for the peace and serenity of the backwaters and beaches.

The Journey Begins – A Special Stay by the Beach

I traveled by road, excited yet nervous about venturing alone for the first time. My budget-friendly resort turned out to be right in front of Marari Beach, an unexpected yet beautiful surprise. Waking up to the sound of waves and walking barefoot on the soft sand became one of the most cherished parts of my trip.

I spent most of my time on foot or using local buses, embracing the simplicity of solo exploration. Alappuzha is known for its rich seafood culture, and being a seafood lover, I indulged in everything from Alleppey fish curry to kingfish, squids, and prawns at small continental seafood cafés. Each meal felt like an adventure in itself.

A Day of Discovery – Exploring Alappuzha’s Hidden Gems

I started my day with an early morning stroll along the Marari Beach, soaking in the golden sunrise before heading to the Alappuzha Lighthouse. This historic structure, built during the reign of Marthanda Varma II, was the first of its kind along the Arabian Sea coast of Kerala. As a history fanatic, I was mesmerized by the thought of the bustling trade activities during different colonial eras—standing there, it felt like stepping straight into a history textbook.

From there, I wandered through the town, watching houseboats drift lazily along the backwaters. Instead of a houseboat stay, I chose a Shikara ride along Punnamada Lake. This half-hour boat ride took me past small markets, hidden resorts, and Pathiramanal Island. The cool breeze, rippling waters, and the sight of tiny fish jumping out of the lake created a moment of absolute serenity.

A Spiritual Pause – The Arthunkal Church

Next, I hopped on a bus to Arthunkal Church, officially known as St. Andrew’s Roman Catholic Basilica. Constructed by Portuguese missionaries in the 16th century, it is the largest shrine of St. Sebastian in the world. Standing in its presence, I felt a deep sense of peace. The annual Makaram Perunnal festival, which attracts millions of pilgrims, must be a sight to witness, though my visit was quieter. I spent some time in prayer, grateful for the journey that had already changed my perspective on solo travel.

Golden Sunset & Midnight Sand – Pathiramanal Island

Later in the evening, I took another boat to Pathiramanal Island, meaning ‘midnight sand’. The island, located in Vembanad Lake, is home to a variety of migratory birds. The best time to visit is around 4 to 6 PM, and I was lucky to witness the golden sunset as I sat on the dense island, surrounded by nothing but nature. Some travelers climbed trees to relax, and I found a cozy spot to take in the beauty. The boat riders waited, ready to take visitors back every 30 minutes.

Reflections Under the Night Sky

I ended my trip where it began—Marari Beach, this time for a peaceful night stroll. Sitting by the water, I reflected on how this short journey had changed me. Traveling solo for the first time, I realized the joy of my own company, the thrill of navigating unknown roads, and the beauty of unplanned moments. Alappuzha had gifted me confidence and a newfound appreciation for solitude.

More to Explore Next Time

Although my trip was short, I noted places for my next visit:

Ambalapuzha Sree Krishna Temple – Famous for its centuries-old temple architecture and the divine Ambalapuzha Palpayasam, a sweet rice pudding offered as prasad.

Revi Karunakaran Memorial Museum – Showcasing Kerala’s rich art and history, built in honor of a renowned businessman.

Concluding Thoughts

Alappuzha is a landmark between the broad Arabian Sea and a vast network of rivers flowing into it. Its lush blue waters and tropical climate make it a paradise where nature has showered her richest bounties. In awe of its beauty and thus Alleppey, the Venice of the East” found its place on the world tourism map. Alappuzha is not just a destination—it is an experience of timeless serenity and charm.
